IBI Group developed a modern, Emirati-inspired design to shape the Masdar neighbourhood into a vibrant and pedestrian-friendly environment in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The urban development is woven with narrow shaded walkways and wider open spaces that were carefully oriented to harness prevailing winds for ventilation and passive-cooling.

The design of Masdar’s neighbourhood focused on creating a space with the highest quality of life and lowest environmental footprint. The neighbourhood is defined by iconic open spaces, including the central District Plaza, southern Visitor’s Center, and northern Gateway Park. The extensive attention to the usage of outside spaces and ventilations for pedestrians played a large role in shifting behaviours of health and wellness within the neighbourhood. The project achieved LEED Platinum certification for some of the open space plots, and a project-wide 4 Pearl Estidama certification.

The flagship District Plaza can host both smaller community events and larger institutional celebrations. The space can also smoothly transition visitors from plaza level to upper levels with an elevated retail roof-deck. The roof-deck provides shaded respite, defining the plaza’s form while reducing its scale.

Additionally, the Gateway Park within the neighbourhood uses sculptural landforms derived from the country’s geology and historic tower architecture to conceal vehicular parking entrances and accommodate accessible pathways. A grand stair visually and physically connects the greenbelt to the park and beyond while announcing the city’s green infrastructure.

Overall, our design provides a sustainable neighbourhood that stays true to its cultural roots. The neighbourhood is designed to promote outdoor community interactions, health and wellness, and urban development.
